Our History

The choir was formed by Gareth Malone at RMB Chivenor, as part of the television series ‘The Choir’, entitled ‘The Choir: Military Wives’. The aim of the choir was to help the wives and girlfriends of servicemen currently deployed in Afghanistan to express themselves through song.

As the series progressed, Gareth led the Chivenor group to perform locally in the Pannier Market in Barnstaple, and then, alongside the choir formed at the Royal Citadel, Plymouth: at a Graduation Dinner at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and at other major events nationally. The climax of the television series was their performance of ‘Wherever You Are’ at The Royal British Legion's Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on 12 November 2011, in the presence of HM The Queen.

The choir have seen huge success and have a number of singles, albums and awards, most notably their No.1 single 'Wherever You Are'.

The choir is now incorporated as a charity and performs as the Chivenor Military Ladies Choir. The choir is proud to have inspired, and some of our ladies co-founded The Military Wives Choirs Foundation. They have since helped over 74 Military Wives Choirs to be created on Bristish Military bases in the UK and Overseas.

They continue to provide support for fellow military wives and strive to raise awareness of military family life.
